Benefit Sanction Workshop August 2019

Are you a solo parent and do not have the father of your children on the birth certificate? Are you affected by a benefit sanction?

*THIS IS A HUI FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE 70A SANCTION*

Nau mai haere mai! Join AAAP advocates for a hui to find out how you can get your 70A sanction backpaid. We'll have some tea, biscuits, and discuss about whether you're eligible for a backpayment. We will have a team of volunteers who will guide you through the process of how to get it backpaid. This is a tamariki friendly event.

There will be a journalist on the day who will be talking to people who are keen about their experience of the sanction. This can be done anonymously.

Q: What is a 70A Sanction?
A: It affects sole parents who did not have the other parent of their child in their birth certificate. The government has mostly targeted mothers and Māori. People affected by the sanction had $22-28 a week deducted per child whose other parent is not on the birth certificate. There's thousands of mothers who have been historically affected by this sanction. The Government is removing the sanction each year but it is not planning on proactively paying back mothers affected by it, despite acknowledging the sanction was wrong and had no evidence it served its purpose when introduced. Since the recent changes in legislation it is now called 192-194 sanction.
